What kind of wedding is this?
This is a Byzantine Catholic wedding, celebrated in the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church. It is one of the oldest forms of Christian marriage, full of rich prayers, sacred chant, and ancient symbolism. The Sacrament is called the Mystery of Crowning, and it will be celebrated as part of the Divine Liturgy (our form of the Holy Mass, the Lord's Supper).
Didn't I see you two already wearing rings?
Good eye! That's because in our tradition, the Betrothal (engagement blessing and ring exchange) is its own separate service. We celebrated it privately in the church beforehand. What you'll see on the wedding day is the Crowning, which is the actual marriage sacrament, what us Greeks call a "Holy Mystery."
Will there be Holy Communion?
Yes. The wedding is taking place during the Divine Liturgy, and Holy Communion will be offered. All Catholics who are properly prepared (through prayer, fasting, and recent Confession) are invited to receive. Others are invited to remain seated during this time, and join in singing the Communion Hymns.
What will happen during the ceremony?
You will see many sacred moments:
The Crowning of the bride and groom, symbolising martyrdom and unity.
The Dance of Isaiah ("the First Dance"), a joyful procession led by the priest, where the bride and groom take their first steps together as a married couple.
All tied together with the reception of Our Blessed Lord in the Holy Eucharist.
